| Determining Carpet Performance
and Durability FIBER Polyester - Polyester good color clarity and is luxurious, durable against abrasions, easy to clean, and resistant to water soluble stains but, does not hold its fiber height under traffic and shifting weight as well as other carpet fibers. Polyester carpets costs less than wool and nylon. Polypropylene (also known as Olefin) - This is one of the most stain resistant fibers on the market today. These fibers are Òthrough colorÓ substances, which means that the color is added during the production of the fiber (not dyed later). Works best in loop carpets such as berbers. It is strong, mildew resistant, moisture resistant, and easy to clean (bleach can be used safely in some cases). However, olefin can be easy to crush depending on the pile. Wool - Wool is a natural fiber, luxurious and strong and maintains its fiber height but is usually more expensive. Blends - Blends are typically made from nylon and olefin. This blend is resilient but the different fiber types often resist stains differently. Stains will often stand-out prominently with these blends. |
WEIGHT Face weight is the number of ounces of fiber per square yard. The amount is directly related to performance and durability. TWIST Twist is the number of times a fiber is twisted together in one inch length. The twist relates directly to the carpet's performance. A poorly twisted carpet may unravel, giving a frayed and shaggy appearance. DENSITY Density is how tightly together the fiber is stitched into the carpet backing. To avoid a crushed and matted appearance, choose a carpet with high density. CUSHION Cushion relates to the padding installed under the carpet. A denser padding increases comfort and durability. MAINTENANCE In order to keep your carpet in the best possible condition vacumn on a regular basis and have your carpets professionally cleaned when needed. |
