Laminate flooring is hard surface flooring
utilizing a fiberboard core and Melamine wear
layer. Laminate belong to a type of flooring
referred to as a floating floor. This means that
the laminate is installed without attaching it to
the sub-floor via glue, nails, or staples. It floats
above the existing sub-floor.
Most dry, stable sub-floors can serve
as the base for a floating floor;
however, carpet may not be used, as it
does not offer the necessary support
for a floating floor system. Laminate
floors have protective layer for wear
resistance.

Laminate flooring offers a wide selection of

actually several different layers of various
materials that are pressed together to form each
plank. The planks have tongue and grooved
edges on all 4 sides to secure the planks
together. Most laminate floors use some sort of
glue less locking system, often referred to as
Click floors. For more realism several laminate
manufactures are now offering a micro-beveled
edging on certain styles.
Backing: is usually a melamine plastic layer for
structural stability and moisture resistance.
Core: generally made from high-density fiber
board, particle board or plastic provides impact
resistance and stability.
Decorative layer: Which gives the floor the
appearance of wood or tile.
Wear layer: The melamine wear is a tough, clear
finish reinforced with aluminum oxide. Using heat
and pressure the wear layer becomes an
incredibly hard, durable finish and stain
resistance.
